Bel Bibaha or Ihi of Newari Religion

Newari culture, Newari girls married three times in their lives. The first marriage is called Bel Bibaha or “Ihi (Newari) and then married to the Sun which is called “Bara Tayegu” (Newari) or “Gufa Rakhne” (Nepali). When they get into human conjugal relationship its actually their marriage. These marriage ceremonies are conducted both among Buddhist Newars and Hindu Newars.

According to the Newari Culture, before reach their puberty, Newari girls married to the fruit of wood-apple tree called Bel. It is performed at the girl’s odd age like 5, 7, 9 before they start menstruation. Bel Bibaha (Ihi in Newari) is a two-day ceremony, which start with purification ritual and end with “Kanyadan” (giving away the virgin) by the father of Girl. Bel Bibaha (Ihi) is regared a very sacred Newari ritual, prefermed by Newari Priest called “Gubhaju” for Buddhist Newars and “Deobhaju” for Hindu Newars.

The first day of the ceremony is called “Dusala Kriya”. On this day, young girls have to bathe with pure water and are dressed like a bride in ankle length skirt, blouse and shawl. These days, you will see them as mini versions of traditional Nepali brides. Then all the girls will gather in the priest’s house. They sit on the floor in a long line with their mothers. Then the Puja begins where these girls go through sequences of ritual actions of purification. They have to worship images of Suvarna Kumara, the golden Bachelor which is an aspect of Lord Vishnu. It normally takes 5-6 hours for this ceremony to be over.

The second day is the most important day of the ritual ‘Kanyadan’ (giving away of the daughter by the father) is performed on this day. For this day as well, the young girls are dressed as brides and taken for the Puja. On this day, they wear some special ornaments as well. There will be a special person who cut toe nails for all the girls and then paint the feet with red colour called ‘Alah’. Also at the end of the day, ‘Thaa bu’ , a plate which had eggs, yogurt, wine, fruits, Roti, meat, fish and much more for the girls to eat is served like in the real wedding. There will be more Puja performed and the day will end by the father doing a ‘Kanyadan’ and giving away his daughter to Lord Vishnu in marriage with the Bel fruit as a witness.
Ihi (Bel Bibaha) is performed to save from various dangers, in particular the possibility of attack from malicious spirits. But by far the most commonly given reason is to protect the girl from the awful stigma of widowhood. Ihi links the girl in an eternal marriage with a god. Therefore the death of a mortal human spouse cannot deprive her of her married status thus freeing her from the custom of having to burn on one’s husband’s funeral pyre which was prevalent among Hindu communities a few centuries ago. Ihi rite also enforces the right of the widow’s remarriage in the Newar Community, thus liberating the women form Hindu orthodox viewpoint of one life one marriage system. Though the original rite seems to have been lost with the cultural invasion in the valley, Ihi is still performed among Newars with compulsion.
